Robinson's Pot

The entrance to Robinson's Pot is easy to miss if you're not paying attention - a modest opening in the limestone near Skipton that drops straight down into the darkness. What makes it worth finding is what lies below: a vertical shaft that plummets about 60 metres, making it one of Yorkshire's most dramatic cave entrances. You won't be wandering through vast chambers here; this is a serious pothole for experienced cavers with proper equipment, not a tourist cave.

That said, even non-cavers can appreciate the geology from above. The limestone landscape around it tells the story of thousands of years of water carving through rock, and the raw exposure of the shaft is genuinely impressive. It's the sort of place that makes you understand why the Pennines are caving country.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Malham is just 4.7 miles away, or Ribblesdale Pods slightly further - Robinson's Pot works as a fascinating detour on a walking day rather than a destination in itself. The surrounding moorland has proper trails worth your time. Spring or summer is best; winter rain can make the area waterlogged and the approach path muddy. Plan 20 minutes to locate it and have a look, then factor in the walk across open country. Families with young children won't get much from it, but older kids interested in geology or caving will find it genuinely intriguing. It's free to visit, though reaching it requires good navigation and sturdy boots.
