Roach Wood

Deep in the Wiltshire countryside near Calne, Roach Wood is one of those places you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a proper ancient woodland - the sort where the trees are genuinely old and the paths wind through dense canopy with barely a sound. You'll find yourself among beech and oak, with the forest floor thick enough that footsteps disappear. There's real quietness here, the kind that feels increasingly rare.

The woodland itself isn't massive - you can work through the main paths in an hour or so - but it rewards a slower pace. It's not a destination attraction with facilities or interpretation boards; it's a place to actually be in woodland rather than visit an attraction about woodland. Families with older kids who enjoy exploring will find it engaging. Younger children might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes. The ground can be muddy and uneven, so proper footwear matters.
