Riverside Park Nature Reserve

The River Wey cuts through Surrey with proper purpose, and Riverside Park Nature Reserve sits right along its banks - a stretch of woodland and wetland that feels genuinely wild for a place so close to civilisation. You're walking through mixed woodland one minute, then suddenly you're at the water's edge watching for kingfishers and herons. The reserve itself is free to access, which is always a win.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow amble rather than a quick visit. Allow a couple of hours if you want to do the main paths properly - nothing strenuous, just woodland trails that loop back on themselves. Families with younger kids will manage fine, though there's not much in the way of facilities, so pack drinks and snacks. Birdwatchers should absolutely make the trip, especially during spring and autumn migration. The wetland areas are where you'll spot the interesting stuff.

Best time is early morning when the woodland is quieter and you've got a genuine chance of seeing wildlife. Midday feels a bit exposed and warm in summer. From Chantry Wood Campsite just 2.3 miles away, or any of the other parks dotted across the Surrey Hills - Hammonds Glamping, Warren Farm, Horsley - you could easily slip over here as part of a wider park holiday exploring the area. It pairs well with a morning walk, leaves the afternoon free for other bits. Worth the detour if you're staying nearby.
