Stoke Park

Stoke Park is a proper working nature reserve in Surrey where you'll actually see what conservation looks like on the ground. This isn't a manicured visitor attraction - it's a living, breathing habitat that the team actively manages for wildlife. You get woodland walks, open grassland, and the kind of peace you don't find near most parks.

The reserve works best for walkers and anyone interested in what goes on behind the scenes of land management. Birdwatchers will rate it highly; there's decent variety depending on the season. Don't expect visitor facilities or themed attractions - this is the real thing. Most people spend 90 minutes to two hours here, though you can linger longer if you're serious about spotting particular species.

It's free to visit, which is brilliant value. The nearest campsite is Chantry Wood, just 1.8 miles away - close enough for a proper park-based holiday without being surrounded by caravans. If you're camping in the Surrey Hills area, Stoke Park fills a gap between spending all day at the seaside and sitting in a field. It's the kind of place you'll visit twice during a week's stay: once properly to walk the whole thing, once again because you noticed something you wanted to explore further.

Timing-wise, early morning is when you'll see most wildlife. Spring and autumn are cracking seasons here.
