River Walkham

The Walkham cuts through some proper Devon woodland, and if you're staying near Tavistock, it's worth half a morning to walk the riverside paths. You get moorland views, the river itself doing its thing through a steep valley, and enough shade from the trees that it's pleasant even on warmer days. The walk isn't demanding - mostly flat along the water, though the banks are genuinely steep in places, so keep an eye on younger children.

Best for walkers and anyone who wants a quiet spot without the crowds of Dartmoor proper. The reserve has its own rhythm - kingfishers if you're lucky, red squirrels sometimes, and the sound of water that genuinely helps you switch off. You can spend ninety minutes or three hours here depending on whether you're strolling or sitting. No facilities to speak of, so bring a packed lunch if you're making a day of it.

If you're based at Langstone Manor or Woodovis - both excellent if you want actual comfort alongside the outdoors - the Walkham is a natural half-day slot. It slots in well with other Dartmoor walks, though it's gentler than some of the higher moorland. Free to access, and you won't pay for parking either. The key is timing: go early or late in the day to avoid what little traffic the paths get. Spring's lovely when everything's green, but honestly it works year-round.
