River Usk

The River Usk winds through Powys like a proper lifeline - chalk streams don't come much cleaner than this, and the water's so clear you can spot trout from the bank. From Brecon heading south, the river picks up pace as it cuts through the Beacons, offering everything from lazy floating stretches to white-water sections that'll get your heart racing.

You've got real options here depending what appeals. Walkers will love the towpath sections - easy ambles with water views and hills rising either side, takes an hour or two depending which stretch you fancy. Kayakers and canoeists make a day of it, launching upstream and drifting down past woodland and open moorland. Anglers know it well for salmon and trout, particularly productive in spring and autumn. There's something less forced about the Usk than some Welsh rivers - it doesn't try too hard, just gets on with being lovely.

The nearest base is Brecon, five minutes' drive, where you'll find actual facilities. Cefn Cantref Campsite sits barely a mile away and is well-rated - wake up and walk straight to the water. Pencelli Castle, four miles south, gives you more space if you're camping. Woodland Park Glamping at the same distance is worth it if you want to avoid tent pegs and still wake to river sounds.

Budget a morning or afternoon minimum. The walk's free, obviously - parking's usually easy on minor roads. Go before August when families thin out, or late spring when the water's high and the light's sharp.
