RIVER SEVERN INTERNATIONAL

The Severn bore is one of those British curiosities that sounds far more exotic than it actually is. This tidal phenomenon happens several times a year when the River Severn's funnel-shaped estuary creates a wave that surges upstream - it's genuinely mesmerising if you time it right, less so if you don't. You'll want to be near Lydney to catch it, positioning yourself along the riverbank where locals gather with their cameras and thermoses.

Timing is everything here. The bore only happens around the spring and autumn equinoxes when tidal conditions align properly, and even then, you're gambling on visibility and wave height. Some days it's thrilling, a proper wall of water moving upstream. Other times you'll see a gentle swell and wonder what the fuss is about. Check tide tables before you go - seriously.

Walkers and water enthusiasts get the most from this. Families with young children might find it underwhelming if the bore is small, though the riverbank itself is pleasant enough for a stroll. Allow a couple of hours if you're making a trip specifically for it, less if you're combining it with exploring Lydney's history or the Forest of Dean nearby.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks in the area - Deanwood or Whitemead Forest Park are closest at around five miles out - it's worth a morning visit. Just don't bank your entire day on it. The Severn bore is brilliant when conditions are right, but you're at the mercy of Mother Nature here.
