River Nene Lock

The lock itself is a working piece of Victorian engineering that does exactly what it was built to do - manage the water levels on the River Nene as it flows toward Peterborough. You won't find much in the way of visitor facilities or interpretation, but that's partly what makes it worth a look. It's a proper functioning lock, not a museum piece, so there's something satisfying about watching the mechanics in action if a narrowboat happens to pass through while you're there.

The real appeal is the walk along the towpath. The riverside setting is genuinely pleasant, with willows lining the water and enough space to stretch your legs without fighting crowds. Walkers will find this a decent waypoint on a longer Nene Valley route, and it's the kind of place where you might spot herons or kingfishers if you're quiet and patient. Kids won't spend hours here - it's not that sort of attraction - but families based at Castle Farm Campsite or The Nest Glamping nearby could easily incorporate it into a morning walk without adding much time to their day.

Better as part of a broader explore of the Peterborough area than as a standalone trip. If you're already out walking the Nene Valley or staying at one of the local parks, it's well worth the detour. The lock's working status means the best time to visit is during daylight hours when boat traffic is more likely, and the towpath is accessible year-round. Expect to spend twenty minutes to an hour depending on whether you're just passing through or actually sitting to watch the water.
