River Dee Banks

The River Dee cuts through Flintshire with proper purpose, and its banks offer one of those understated stretches of North Wales that rewards a slow wander far more than it rewards rushing. This isn't a manicured nature trail with interpretive boards at every turn - it's a genuine riverine habitat where you might spot kingfishers darting between the banks, herons stalking the shallows, or if you're lucky, otters leaving their telltale signs on the rocks.

What you're really doing here is walking. The towpath runs for miles in both directions, so you pick your distance based on mood and weather. Summer's the obvious choice, but autumn brings something special - the water level rises, the light goes golden and mean, and you'll have the place largely to yourself. Winter's bleak but dramatic if you don't mind cold hands.
