River Blyth

The River Blyth winds through Suffolk's coast like it's got all the time in the world, and honestly, that's part of its appeal. You can walk alongside it, watch for birds (herons are regular), and get a genuine feel for how the Suffolk coast actually works, beyond the pier and ice cream shops.

For walkers, this is the thing. The riverbank paths are manageable, the pace naturally slows, and there's that rare quality of feeling genuinely away from it all whilst staying close to Southwold's amenities. Birdwatchers will find plenty to occupy themselves. Families after a gentler outing than beach time will appreciate the space and the chance to spot wildlife without fighting crowds.

There's no entrance fee - it's a natural feature you can access freely. Allow an hour or two depending on how far you want to walk; the full route to the sea takes longer but the short stretches near town are perfectly satisfying. Early morning or late afternoon is best for both light and avoiding the midday rush from town.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Pigs in Blankets or Haw Wood Farm, the river makes an excellent alternative to another beach day.
