Built in the 1820s as a sighting tower for the Rivelin Tunnel - an early engineering feat that carried water to Sheffield - it's genuinely obscure. You're essentially climbing a stubby Victorian watchtower to peer at landscape and a disappeared industrial system. Not exactly Instagram-famous, which is rather the point.

The walk up takes minutes rather than hours, making it more of a diversion than a destination in itself. The views across Hope Valley are decent, particularly if you're already out hiking in the area. History buffs will find it genuinely interesting - it marks the point where canal engineers would have surveyed the tunnel's route. Everyone else might spend fifteen minutes and wonder why they didn't just look at the valley from ground level.

It's free and there's no obvious visitor infrastructure, which means no queues and no gift shop. Bring proper footwear though; the terrain around it can be boggy. If you're based at Laneside Caravan Park or the Castleton site, both within easy driving distance, this works as a quick morning leg-stretch before exploring the caves and walks Hope Valley does far better. It's the kind of place that rewards the curious rather than the casual day-tripper. Worth ten minutes if you're passing; don't plan your holiday around it.
