Risp Hill

The walk up Risp Hill rewards you with proper views across the Lowlands - on a clear day you can see right across to the hills beyond Lockerbie. It's not a massive peak, but that's rather the point. The climb takes about an hour from the car park, and the path is well-trodden without being overrun.

This one suits walkers after a decent stride without needing full hillwalking kit. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the ascent a bit of a slog. The landscape here is rolling rather than dramatic - moorland and grassland with the occasional crag. It's that gentle Scottish Lowlands terrain that grows on you.

Head up in the morning if you can. Afternoon light can turn thin and grey quickly, and the wind does pick up once you're exposed. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit itself, so bring water and something to eat. The whole trip takes about two hours return, which slots nicely into a half-day outing.

If you're based at Cressfield Caravan Park or Hoddom Castle just down the road, Risp Hill works as a proper break from site life without requiring a long drive. It's the sort of walk that doesn't sound special until you're up there watching the light move across the valleys. Worth the effort.
