Ringlands Plantation

The moment you push through the tree-lined entrance near Malton, you realise Ringlands Plantation isn't some manicured showpiece - it's proper working forest. Conifers tower overhead, their branches so dense the light gets filtered into this greenish cathedral of shadow and needle-smell.

It's the kind of place where walkers genuinely thrive. The paths are decent underfoot, well-maintained without being over-engineered, and you can lose a solid two hours here without feeling rushed. The woodland canopy swallows sound; you notice bird calls you'd otherwise miss. Families with young kids will manage fine for a ramble, though there's nothing fancy - no visitor centre, no cafés, no climbing frames. What you get is trees and air and the proper north Yorkshire countryside.

The plantation sits just a few miles from Malton, so it works brilliantly as a morning walk if you're staying at Humble Bee Farm Glamping or the nearby cottage and camping spots. Pop over, stretch your legs for an hour or two, then head into Malton for lunch. The forest is free to wander - no charge, no tickets needed.

Go when the light's clear, ideally autumn or early spring when the mist sits between the trees. Summer can feel claustrophobic under that heavy canopy, and the midges are absolutely vicious. Winter's actually lovely if you're dressed for it - fewer people, cleaner air, and the frost on the branches rewards an early start.
