Ridley Wood

The woodland around Ridley Wood offers proper Essex countryside - the kind of place where you can actually lose the sound of the A120 for a bit. It's a decent stretch of forest east of Dunmow, solid for a woodland walk if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots like Dairymeade Farm or Hill Farm campsite.

What you get here is straightforward: trees, paths, the occasional clearing. It's not dramatic or particularly unusual for Essex woodland, but it does the job. The floor is soft underfoot after rain, which beats trudging through mud on a public footpath. Good for families with younger kids who want to let off steam without hiking for hours - most people spend an hour to ninety minutes here before heading back.

Historically it's unremarkable, so don't come expecting ruins or ancient monuments. You come for the walk itself and a bit of green space. Morning light filters through the canopy nicely, and it's quieter on weekday mornings than weekends when locals pile in from Dunmow.

If you're based at either of the five-star rated campsites nearby, it's worth a morning ramble. Combines easily with a visit to Dunmow's high street for lunch afterwards. On its own though, without the proximity to accommodation, it's not a destination in itself - there are more interesting woodlands within an hour's drive if you're planning a forest-focused day out.
