Rickleboro Hill Spinney

Rickleboro Hill Spinney is a proper woodland walk just a few miles outside Northampton - the sort of place locals know but visitors often miss. It's nothing grand, just a quiet stretch of mixed woodland where you can actually hear yourself think. The paths wind through beech and oak, and on a decent day the light filters through the canopy in that particular way that makes you forget you're close to a town at all.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination attraction - there's no cafe, no visitor centre, no family fun stuff. What you get is woodland, air, and an hour or so of genuine peace. The paths are manageable for most ages and abilities, though it can get muddy in winter. Bring proper shoes rather than trainers.

There's no entrance fee as far as I can tell, and it's the sort of place that doesn't publish opening hours because, well, it's a wood. Go when you want. Early morning is best if you're hoping for wildlife; weekday afternoons mean fewer dog walkers.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Lakeview is closest at just over two miles - this makes a solid morning's addition to your holiday. It won't take all day, but combined with a proper walk elsewhere in the area, it fills the gap nicely. Don't expect drama or Instagram moments. Just trees, birdsong, and the smell of damp earth. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
