Rhos Wdig / Goodwick Moor Nature Reserve

The moorland rolls on for what feels like forever once you climb up from Goodwick. This is proper wild Pembrokeshire - gorse, heather, and rough grass stretching toward the coast with barely a fence in sight. You're looking at a Site of Special Scientific Interest, which in practice means the wildlife teams take it seriously and you get to wander through something that hasn't been tidied up for tourists.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow walk rather than a quick visit. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the mix of habitats pulls in everything from stonechats to wheatears depending on the season. The ground can be boggy, especially in winter, so proper boots matter. Allow an hour minimum, though you could easily spend half a day here if the weather plays ball and you're the type who stops to look at plants.

Families with young kids might find it a bit of a trudge - there's no cafe, no facilities, just you and the landscape. Walkers and nature types will think it's worth every muddy step. It's free to access and open year-round, which is rare enough to note. The nearest town is Fishguard, just under a mile away, so it works brilliantly as a half-day outing if you're camping at Fishguard Holiday Park or Tregroes. Spring and early summer hit the sweet spot for wildflowers, though autumn light on the moorland is honestly more atmospheric.
