Rhaeadr y Parc Mawr (The Grey Mare's Tail)

The walk up to Rhaeadr y Parc Mawr - better known as The Grey Mare's Tail - is steep and unmissable if you're camping in the Conwy Valley. Starting from near Llanrwst, you'll push through woodland before emerging at a proper waterfall that thunders down the hillside, especially after rain. It's the kind of place that photographs well but feels even better in person, with the mist catching the light and the roar of water cutting through whatever peace you thought you'd find.

This isn't a ten-minute gawp. Allow a solid hour if you're going at a reasonable pace, longer if you've got kids who want to explore the rocks and splash around in the pool at the base. The name comes from the shape the water makes as it falls - you'll see it immediately. Free to visit, naturally, since it's out in the hills with no visitor centre or car park infrastructure.

Walkers will find it genuinely rewarding, though the path gets muddy and rooty. Families should bring decent boots and a sense of humour about wet trousers. If you're staying at Conwy Valley Touring Park, it's practically on your doorstep - a morning activity before heading into Snowdonia proper. Come when the weather's been wet for a few days if you want to see it at its best. Summer crowds are manageable since most people stick to easier trails elsewhere in North Wales.
