Reigate Tunnel Road Caves

The caves beneath Reigate weren't carved out by nature - they were dug by hand, probably back in the 13th century, when locals quarried chalk and stone from the hillside. What you get now is a proper maze of tunnels and chambers running under the town, some of them tall enough to walk through without ducking, others more cramped. It's genuinely atmospheric down there, the kind of place where your footsteps echo and you actually feel the age of the thing.

Access is limited - the Western Cave Management Society opens the caves on specific dates throughout the summer (May, June, July, August, September), so you can't just turn up whenever you fancy. Check the website beforehand. The visit takes a couple of hours at most, depending on how deep you want to explore. History buffs will find it fascinating; kids can get a bit restless if they're not already interested in medieval quarrying and underground passages.

It's worth factoring into a longer Surrey day if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Betchworth Fort Park, Surrey Hills Park, or Merrywood Park are all within a few miles of Tadworth. The caves themselves won't fill a full holiday, but combined with walks in the Surrey Hills National Landscape and pottering around the town above ground, you've got a decent afternoon sorted. Just don't expect daytrippers and crowds - this is proper local stuff, and all the better for it.
