Reigate Hill

The walk up Reigate Hill from Tadworth takes about twenty minutes if you're reasonably fit, and the views across the Weald are genuinely worth the leg work. On a clear day you can see for miles - proper rolling countryside stretching out below, nothing but green and fields and the occasional church spire poking through. There's a fort at the top, Victorian-era defences that look rather imposing when you're standing next to them, though it's the views that'll hold your attention, not the brickwork.

This is prime territory for walkers and anyone keen on a bit of Surrey countryside. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the ascent tedious without incentive. Allow a good hour to get up, potter about, and come back down without rushing. The hill itself is free to access - no gates, no fees, just public footpaths and fresh air.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Alderstead Heath or Surrey Hills Park are both within spitting distance - Reigate Hill makes an easy morning out. It's the sort of place that justifies a night under canvas. On a sunny afternoon the view is cracking, though weekends get busier than you'd hope. Go early or go midweek if you can. The real charm is in the walking itself rather than any single destination, so don't expect a visitor centre or tea shop at the summit. Just good legs, better air, and countryside that reminds you why the South Downs draw people like wasps to jam.
