Reek House Hill

The walk up Reek House Hill starts innocuously enough from the Skipton side, but once you're committed to the climb, you realise why locals speak about it with a certain respect. It's a proper fell rather than a gentle ramble - the kind of hill that leaves you breathing hard and grateful for the flatter sections.

From the top, the views across the Yorkshire Dales are genuinely worth the slog. On a clear day you can see for miles, which explains why this has been a landmark for centuries. The fell itself isn't hugely dramatic compared to some peaks in the region, but there's something satisfying about reaching the summit and finding it relatively quiet - you won't be queuing for photos here.

It works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Coxons Farm or Hedgerow, giving you a proper morning's hike without needing to drive far. Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. Walkers will get far more from it than casual visitors - it's not a stroll, and the rewards are views rather than facilities or historical drama.

No facilities up there, so bring water and a packed lunch if you want to make a day of it. Autumn is probably best - the light's better and you won't be dodging summer crowds on the lower paths. It's free to access, naturally, being open fell.
