Red Kite Centre, Laurieston

The Red Kite Centre sits just outside Laurieston, a few miles from Castle Douglas, and it's genuinely one of those places that works whether you're mad about birds or just passing through. You'll learn how red kites were hunted to extinction in Britain and how a reintroduction programme - starting back in the 1990s - has brought them screaming back over the Lowlands. The centre itself is modest, but the viewing area is the real draw. On a decent day, you can spot them hunting over the moorland, their forked tails unmistakable once you know what you're looking for.

Walkers and birdwatchers absolutely should make the trip. Kids get a kick out of spotting an actual red kite in the wild rather than just reading about it indoors. Photography types won't want to miss it either - the vantage point is proper set up for getting a decent shot if you're patient.

Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're keen. Best visited during daylight hours - obviously - though mornings tend to be better for spotting birds active. It's free to visit, which is always welcome. If you're based at Galloway Glamping or Loch Ken Holiday Park nearby, it's an easy detour that doesn't eat a whole afternoon. Pair it with a walk around the loch itself or a poke around Castle Douglas town, and you've got a solid few hours sorted.
