Ray Wood, York

Walk far enough north of York's city walls and you'll stumble into Ray Wood, a proper slice of ancient woodland that feels a world away from the tourist crowds round the Minster. The place is thick with bluebells come spring - mid-April to early May is when it's at its absolute best - and the canopy's dense enough that you can actually cool off on a warm day.

It's a woodland wander rather than a destination, really. There are footpaths threading through, and you'll find yourself among oak and beech mostly, with the forest floor soft underfoot. Bring proper shoes though; it gets boggy in patches after rain. Allow a couple of hours if you're not rushing, less if you just want a quick circuit.

Historically minded types will appreciate that this is ancient woodland - it's been here for centuries, which you can feel walking through it. It's not a high-adrenaline spot for kids, but families with younger children who enjoy splashing about in woodland streams and hunting for bluebells won't find it a hard sell.

Free to wander, no gates or barriers. Best visited outside peak tourist season when York itself is rammed. From either York Meadows Caravan & Camping Park or Fox Hill Holiday Park, both just a few miles south, you can easily slot this into a broader Yorkshire break - it's uncrowded, green, and genuinely quiet. Worth the detour if you're looking to escape rather than sightsee.
