Scrogs Wood

Ancient woodland just outside York that's genuinely worth the short drive if you're after a proper walk without the tourist crowds. Scrogs Wood is old-growth forest - the kind where you can actually feel the age of the place, with gnarled oaks and a carpet of woodland floor that's soft underfoot even in dry spells.

It's ideal for walkers who want something more substantial than a park stroll but without needing proper hiking boots. The paths meander through the trees, and depending on which route you take, you're looking at anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours. Families with kids aged seven upwards will find it engaging enough - there's that satisfying sense of exploration without being too demanding on small legs.

The woodland is particularly good in spring when the bluebells come through, and again in autumn when the light gets low and amber through the branches. Summer can feel a bit dense and insectual if you're not keen on that sort of thing.

If you're based at Fox Hill Holiday Park or Flaxton Meadows Campsite nearby, this is a proper alternative to tramping around York city centre. Free access as far as I'm aware, though facilities are minimal - so bring water and decent shoes. The nearest facilities and supplies are back in York itself, which is only a few miles away, making this an easy half-day addition to a wider Yorkshire break.
