RAPTC Museum

The RAPTC Museum in Farnham is one of those places you stumble into and find yourself absorbing far more than you expected. It's essentially a working museum dedicated to reptiles, amphibians and their conservation - run by people who genuinely care about the creatures rather than just herding tourists through. You'll see live animals, handling tanks if you're brave enough, and plenty of information about what these animals actually do in the wild rather than just how cool they look.

It works best for families with older kids and anyone remotely interested in herpetology. Younger children might find it a bit slow if they're not the type to peer at a snake for ten minutes straight. The staff know their stuff and will answer questions until you're satisfied, which is refreshing. Allow a couple of hours - not because you have to, but because once you start talking to the people running it, time disappears.

Farnham itself is lovely, right on the Surrey-Hampshire border, and works well as a base for exploring this part of the South East. You're close enough to Chapel Farm Park (rated excellently at 4.6 out of 5) or the five-star Tilford Woods Lodge Retreat for a proper park holiday. Pop into town for the castle and high street, visit the museum, then disappear into the Waverley countryside. It's a decent mix of culture and green space without feeling rushed.
