Soldiers Ring

The earthworks at Soldiers Ring sit on a wooded slope near Farnham, a proper Iron Age fort that's been quietly decaying into the Surrey countryside for about two thousand years. What you're looking at is a series of defensive ditches and banks - not dramatic, but once you're standing in the middle of them, you start to understand why someone chose this spot. The view across the Wey Valley would have given defenders sight lines for miles.

It's a short walk from the car park, maybe ten minutes, and the site itself takes as long as you want to poke around. There's not much interpretation on the ground, so either bring your own knowledge or do some reading beforehand - it's the kind of place that rewards a bit of homework. Walkers and history types will get more from it than families with young kids, though older children who like scrambling around earthworks could easily spend an hour here.

It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though winter can turn it into a muddy scramble. Don't expect a visitor centre or facilities.
