Rangemoor Wood

Ancient oak and ash trees tower overhead as you pick your way along the winding paths that criss-cross this proper Derbyshire woodland. Just outside Ashbourne, Rangemoor Wood feels wonderfully wild - the sort of place where you might spot a red kite circling above or catch sight of deer disappearing into the bracken.

Families with energetic children will find plenty to explore here. The natural trails aren't too challenging, but there's enough variety in terrain to keep things interesting. Dog walkers love it too - acres of space to let their mutts off the lead without worry. That said, wellies are essential after any rain, as the paths can get properly muddy.

Birders should bring binoculars. The mix of mature trees and clearings attracts a decent range of species, particularly in early morning when the wood is at its most peaceful. Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the dappled light filtering through the canopy, especially during autumn when the colours are spectacular.

Allow at least an hour for a decent wander, though you could easily spend half a day here if you're in no rush. The wood makes an excellent addition to a Derbyshire holiday - several parks like Callow Top Holiday Park and Sandybrook Lodges are within easy reach, making this a cracking spot for a morning constitutional before returning to base.
