Ramsey Island RSPB Nature Reserve

You'll need a boat to reach Ramsey Island, and that's rather the point. This RSPB reserve off the Pembrokeshire coast is properly wild - the kind of place where you're genuinely isolated from the mainland mess, surrounded by seabirds that couldn't care less you've shown up. The island itself is small enough to walk in a couple of hours, with paths that wind past nesting sites where guillemots, razorbills, and puffins (in season) go about their business.

Birders will have a field day here. Spring and summer are peak months when the colonies are at their loudest and most visible, though even in quieter months there's always something circling overhead. The crossing from Ganol can be rough - the waters around Ramsey are notoriously choppy - so it's not for anyone prone to seasickness, and you'll need to book passage in advance.

It's a proper walker's outing rather than a casual stroll. Bring waterproofs regardless of the forecast. Access is restricted to protect the birds, so you can't just wander where you like, but the designated routes cover the best viewpoints.

Pair it with coastal walks around St Davids, which is just a short drive. This isn't a half-hour tick-box job; give yourself a full day if the weather holds.
