Ramsden Reservoir

The water here sits in a proper valley setting, surrounded by moorland that changes colour with the seasons. Ramsden Reservoir is a working water supply for the area, which means it's not the kind of place you can swim in, but it's excellent for a walk around the perimeter or just settling on the bank with a flask and a book.

Walkers will find this genuinely rewarding. The path gives you views across the water and into the surrounding hills - the sort of landscape that makes you understand why Holmfirth has attracted artists and writers. On a clear day it's quite something. Families with young legs will manage the circuit without complaint, though it's hardly a dramatic destination on its own.

The real appeal is using it as part of a longer ramble through the Holme Valley. It fits naturally into a weekend based at one of the nearby camping spots - Whitegate Leisure is closest at under a mile away - and pairs well with walks up onto the surrounding moors. You won't need more than ninety minutes to do the water itself, so combine it with a visit into Holmfirth town centre for lunch, or push on towards some of the higher ground to the south.

It's free and there's no formal admission charge or opening hours to worry about. Best visited in spring when the moorland is fresh, or autumn when the light gets that golden quality. Midweek is quieter than weekends, which matters if you're after some peace.
