R.A.F. Ibsley

The airfield near Ringwood still bears the scars and stories of the Second World War, though these days it's far quieter than it was in 1941 when RAF Ibsley became operational. What you'll find today is largely open ground - the runways and taxiways are mostly gone - but the landscape itself tells the tale. A few original buildings survive, and the whole site carries that particular weight that military heritage grounds do when you actually stand there.

This is one for history enthusiasts rather than families looking for a day out with rides and cafes. You won't find visitor facilities or a visitor centre here; it's more a matter of finding your way round and using your imagination to picture the Spitfires and Hurricanes scrambling from these fields. That said, there's something genuinely moving about walking the perimeter and understanding what happened in this corner of Dorset during wartime.

The nearest proper town is Ringwood, about three miles away, and the New Forest is within striking distance if you're after a longer explore. Several caravan and camping parks sit within five or six miles - Fernwood Glamping is closest at just over two miles, while Hill Cottage Farm near Fordingbridge offers a more traditional camp experience.

Allow an hour or two depending on how deep your interest goes. Go on a clear day if you can, when the open skies somehow feel more meaningful. Check locally before visiting, as access arrangements aren't always straightforward.
