RAF Holmpton Bunker

The bunker sits inland from Withernsea's seafront, a squat concrete structure that doesn't announce itself loudly. This is a Cold War operations centre, built to coordinate RAF defences across the Yorkshire coast during the era when nuclear sirens could have gone off at any moment. Inside, you'll find operations rooms frozen in time, plotting tables, radio equipment, and the sort of cramped corridors that make you understand exactly how tense things must have felt during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

It's fundamentally a history visit rather than a hands-on attraction, so restless younger children might lose interest after forty minutes or so. But if anyone in your group has a genuine interest in Cold War Britain, military operations, or 1960s technology, this deserves a couple of hours. Adults studying post-war history will find it genuinely absorbing.

The nearest town is Withernsea itself, where you'll find fish and chips and the usual seaside infrastructure.
