RAF Castle Camps (WW II)

The runway at Castle Camps is still there - cracked tarmac stretching across farmland east of Saffron Walden where American bombers once thundered down before dawn raids over Germany. This was USAAF Station 563, and walking the perimeter you get a genuine sense of what wartime operations meant: the control tower foundations, scattered concrete hardstands where four-engine Fortresses sat fuelled and armed, the dispersed site layout designed to survive enemy attack.

It's a proper history walk rather than a museum experience. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards doing the heavy lifting for you. You need to bring some knowledge or curiosity about the 8th Air Force, because what you're seeing is skeletal - the bones of a working airfield left to nature and archaeology. That's actually what makes it compelling. You can stand where ground crews waited, where pilots briefed, where men climbed into cockpits knowing some wouldn't come back.

Walkers will appreciate it more than casual visitors. Allow 90 minutes to two hours if you're properly exploring the site. There's no admission charge that I'm aware of - it sits on accessible farmland - but check locally as access can be seasonal. Winter's actually the best time: longer sight lines through bare fields, fewer crops obscuring the hardstands.
