Clay Wood

The woodland floor at Clay Wood is properly soggy underfoot - we're talking genuine Essex wetland here, not the manicured country estates you might expect near Saffron Walden. This is a forest that doesn't apologize for being damp, muddy, and occasionally difficult to navigate, which is precisely why it's worth the trip.

It's a relatively compact woodland, so you won't need more than an hour or two to walk the main tracks. The paths wind through a mix of established trees and younger growth, with stretches that open up enough to give you actual views rather than just tree trunks pressing in from all sides. In spring the woodland floor comes alive; autumn brings that proper golden-light stuff that makes photographers lose their minds.

This isn't a destination for people after a smooth, manicured stroll. Families with young kids who need wide paths and clear signage will find it frustrating. But if you've got teenagers who actually want to walk somewhere interesting, or you're the type who enjoys proper woodland - the kind with roots and bog and real weather - Clay Wood delivers. Walkers will appreciate it as a decent local loop, especially as part of a wider exploration around the Saffron Walden area.

Since it's public woodland, there's no entrance fee or particular opening hours to worry about. If you're camping at Hidden Gem Glamping just down the road, or settled at Hill Farm campsite, this makes a genuine alternative to another lap of the same park path. Go when it's been dry for a few days, unless you genuinely enjoy squelching.
