Marks Wood

The path into Marks Wood is quiet, properly quiet, which is the whole point really. It's a working woodland just east of Saffron Walden where you can actually breathe without bumping into crowds. The main draw is straightforward - it's a decent walk through mixed woodland with paths that feel genuinely peaceful, the kind of place where you notice birdsong again.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a ticketed attraction with visitor centres or interpretation boards, just trees and trails. Allow an hour or so for a proper ramble, though you can dip in and out depending on energy levels. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter and the canopy thick enough that even on grey days there's something atmospheric about it.

Families with older kids will find it manageable, though it's not the sort of place toddlers will find thrilling - there are roots and muddy patches to navigate. If you're based at Hill Farm campsite just 2.8 miles away or Hidden Gem Glamping further out, it makes for an easy morning excursion between other Saffron Walden activities. The town itself has enough going on with its market square and independent shops that you wouldn't want to spend your entire trip here, but as part of a broader Essex countryside loop, it's worth the detour.
