Great Bendysh Wood

The moment you step into Great Bendysh Wood, you understand why glamping sites cluster around this corner of Cambridgeshire. It's proper woodland - the kind with actual trees doing proper woodland things, not a managed municipal park with bark chips and a cafe.

You're looking at dense broadleaf forest east of Saffron Walden, the sort of place where you can walk for an hour and barely see another person. The canopy sits low enough to feel enclosed without being claustrophobic, and the undergrowth is thick enough that you feel genuinely away from it all. Expect muddy paths in winter, nettles in summer, and the occasional surprise rabbit bolting across the trail.

Walkers will get the most from this. There's no playground, no visitor centre, no interpretive boards - just forest. That's either brilliant or dull depending on what you came for. Children who like climbing, den-building, and general woodland exploration will be in their element. Those expecting activities might struggle after an hour.

It's free, as far as I can tell, and there's no obvious entrance fee or visitor infrastructure to worry about. Bring proper footwear though - the ground stays boggy even after dry spells.

If you're staying at Readers Field Glamping or Hidden Gem Glamping, both within three or four miles, this is a genuine bonus - you've got proper woodland on your doorstep rather than just fields. Fits perfectly into a couple of hours between other Essex excursions.
