Quintin's Man (Cairn)

Walk far enough onto Dartmoor from Okehampton and you'll stumble across Quintin's Man - a Bronze Age cairn that sits quietly on the moor without fanfare or visitor centre. It's just stones, really. A pile of them arranged in a circle, weathered by millennia, with the kind of view across moorland that makes you understand why someone bothered to build something here in the first place.

What you're looking at is genuine prehistoric burial architecture. The cairn dates back around 3,500 years, which puts it in perspective when you're standing there in the wind. There's no interpretation board telling you what to think, no café, no postcard stand - just you, the stones, and the open moor. Walkers heading across Dartmoor National Park will appreciate this more than casual day-trippers. Kids might find it underwhelming unless they're already into archaeology or enjoy the hunt itself.

Getting here requires proper moorland walking from Okehampton. You won't find opening hours because there aren't any - it's just there, free, whenever you fancy it. Allow an hour or two depending on your route in. The cairn works well as a waypoint on a longer Dartmoor walk rather than a destination in itself. If you're basing yourself at one of the holiday parks near Dartmoor, it's worth knowing about. Real hikers will get something from it. Everyone else might just see rocks.
