White Hill

The walk up White Hill, just outside Okehampton, rewards you with one of Dartmoor's cleanest views across the high moor. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like Ben Nevis theatrics - but on a clear day you get proper panoramic stuff: rolling moorland stretching toward the distant horizon, granite outcrops punctuating the landscape, and if you're lucky, the kind of light that makes everything look like a watercolour painting.

The ascent is straightforward enough. Most people manage it in under an hour from the car park, and the paths are well-trodden without being crowded. You're walking proper moorland - heather, rough grass, the occasional rocky section - so decent boots are essential, especially after rain when it becomes bog-adjacent. The summit itself is modest but functional: a stone cairn marks the top, and you can sit there munching a sandwich with views that stretch for miles.

Walkers will absolutely get their money's worth here. Families with capable kids aged eight or nine upwards will find it manageable and genuinely engaging rather than a slog. History buffs won't find anything dramatic at the peak itself, but Dartmoor's Bronze Age heritage is scattered across the moor around it.
