Quarry Wood Iron age Earthworks

The earthworks at Quarry Wood are what remain of an Iron Age settlement - basically ancient defensive ditches and banks that once enclosed a proper fortified community. You won't find much interpretation on site, which means either bringing a decent guidebook or doing your homework beforehand. The walk itself is pleasant enough, moving through woodland with the occasional clearing where you can actually see the undulating ground pattern that gives away what's underneath.

It's the sort of place that appeals to archaeology enthusiasts and serious walkers rather than families after a quick photo stop. Kids might find the woods fun for ten minutes, but without visible structures or explanatory panels, they'll struggle to grasp what they're looking at. The real value is in understanding the landscape - standing there imagining Iron Age life, realising how they chose this spot, how the defences once looked.

Maidstone sits just down the road, which makes this an easy add-on to a longer exploration of the area. Several decent parks sit within a few miles - Glamping @ Rankins Farm is closest at two miles out, or you've got Bearsted's caravan site slightly further. The woodland walk takes a solid hour if you're the contemplative type, less if you're just passing through.

Access appears to be open and free, though there's no formal visitor infrastructure. Go on a clear day when the ground isn't waterlogged - these ancient ditches hold water beautifully, which is great for archaeology but murder on boots.
