Quainton Windmill

A proper old brick tower mill standing in the middle of Quainton village, about four miles south of Buckingham. The windmill dates back to 1832 and it's the sort of thing you'd drive past without thinking twice if you didn't know what you were looking at - but it's genuinely worth stopping for if you're in the area.

The mill itself is red brick with a white cap and sails, the classic picture-postcard setup. You can view it from the road, which is free, though getting close enough for a decent photograph means parking sensibly and being respectful of the private land around it. The real appeal is architectural - it's a working piece of industrial heritage from when flour milling actually mattered to the local economy.

Walkers and history types will find it more interesting than families with small children, to be honest. You're not going inside for a guided tour or anything like that - this is about appreciating the structure and taking photographs. Allow fifteen minutes if you're making a detour, maybe half an hour if you're combining it with a wander round the village itself.

If you're camping at Embers Camping just down the road near Claydon, the windmill makes an easy morning or evening stroll from site. It's exactly the sort of low-key local spot that proper countryside breaks are made of - nothing flashy, but authentically Buckinghamshire. Worth the ten-minute drive from your pitch.
