PXI - Mount Tabor

The view from Mount Tabor on a clear day stretches across the Pennines - proper spectacular. It's basically a mound on the outskirts of Barnsley that rises 272 metres, offering one of the best vantage points if you're staying in South Yorkshire. Once you're up there, you can see for miles across the surrounding countryside, and on good visibility days the industrial landscape of the area becomes genuinely interesting rather than bleak.

Getting up takes about twenty minutes on foot from the car park if you're reasonably fit, though the final stretch is a bit steep for what it is. The paths are well-maintained and popular with local walkers, so you won't feel like you're pioneering anything, but that also means it's never remotely dangerous or confusing. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the climb tedious unless they're keen on the adventure bit.

It's free to visit and takes roughly an hour all in - up, look around, back down. The spot works perfectly as part of a broader walk around Barnsley rather than a standalone destination. If you're camped at Greensprings Caravan Park just down the road, it's an easy morning out before heading elsewhere in the region. Don't expect attractions or facilities at the top itself - this is about the walk and the views. Windy too, so dress accordingly. Best visited on a dry day when the visibility actually rewards the effort.
