The Ha Ha Walls near Barnsley are one of those local landmarks that barely gets a mention in guide books, which is precisely why they're worth seeking out. A ha-ha is a sunken fence - basically a ditch with a wall at the bottom - and these particular ones date back centuries, designed to keep livestock off the grounds without spoiling the view from the house. The stone bridge that crosses them is equally handsome, all solid construction and weathered character.

You won't spend hours here, but that's not the point. It's a proper bit of social history, the kind of thing that makes you understand how 18th-century estates actually worked. The walls themselves have real presence, and if you're walking the area around Barnsley, they make a logical stop.
