Wentworth Castle

The grounds here are genuinely impressive - 80 acres of parkland that rise and fall across what feels like proper countryside, even though you're barely a mile from Barnsley town centre. Wentworth Castle itself is a stone baroque mansion built in the early 1700s, all theatrical facades and deliberate grandeur, the sort of place that was designed to make visitors feel small.

Inside, the rooms are furnished and you can walk around learning about the families who lived here, the servants who kept it running, the slow decline and eventual rescue. It's archive work, really - photographs, documents, period pieces - rather than flashy interpretation. History buffs will find it absorbing. Young kids might lose interest after the first floor, unless they're the type to dash about the gardens anyway.

The grounds matter more than the building. There's a proper network of paths through woodland, past ornamental lakes and a baroque chapel, up to the Needle's Eye folly on the skyline. It's a proper walk if you want one, or a gentle 40 minutes if you just amble. The views back across the valley are worth the climb.

If you're camping at Greensprings Caravan Park just down the road, this works as a half-day outing. Spring and autumn are best - summer crowds can make the paths feel cramped, and winter ground conditions get dodgy. Check opening hours before you visit; it does close for maintenance.

Worth the detour? Yes, especially if you're keen on 18th-century follies and actual woodland rather than mowed parkland.
