Putson Coppice

You'll find yourself among proper old woodland the moment you step into Putson Coppice - the kind of forest that feels like it's been here for centuries, which it probably has. Near Ledbury, this coppice offers genuine woodland walking without the crowds you'd find at better-known spots. The trees are dense enough that even on a bright day you're walking in dappled shade, and the paths wind through what feels like genuine countryside rather than a manicured nature reserve.

It's the sort of place walkers actually enjoy - straightforward navigation, decent underfoot conditions most of the year, and no nonsense. You're looking at a couple of hours maximum to explore properly, though you could easily spend longer if you're the type to stop and identify trees or just sit quietly. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find it a bit samey after a while, unless they're into bug-spotting or building dens.

The real advantage is proximity to the holiday parks dotted round Ledbury. The Millpond is just 3.5 miles away - proper cosy spot, that one - and the Hereford Camping and Caravanning Club Site sits at a similar distance if you're after something more structured. Caplor Glamping offers a bit of comfort if you want to base yourself nearby and explore the wider area. Putson Coppice isn't the kind of destination you'll plan a whole trip around, but as part of a Herefordshire break, it's well worth the walk from wherever you're staying.
