Wither's Coppice

Ancient oak and ash trees tower overhead in this working woodland just outside Ledbury, their canopy filtering the light into dappled patches on the forest floor. Wither's Coppice follows traditional English woodland management, with areas of hazel and sweet chestnut cut in rotation to encourage new growth and wildlife habitats. You'll find well-trodden paths weaving between the trees, though they're not waymarked so a decent sense of direction helps. The woodland feels properly wild in places - fallen logs create natural seating spots, and if you're quiet you might spot deer picking their way through the undergrowth. Bird watchers do particularly well here, with woodpeckers drumming away and various finches flitting between the branches. Families with older children who don't mind a bit of mud will enjoy exploring, though pushchair users should probably look elsewhere. The ground can get boggy after rain, so decent walking boots are essential. There's no visitor centre or facilities, making this feel like a genuine slice of the Herefordshire countryside rather than a managed attraction. Allow a couple of hours for a proper wander, and combine it with a visit to nearby Ledbury for lunch.
