Walk across moorland near Lockerbie and you'll stumble upon the remains of Purdomstone, a settlement that's been quietly crumbling for centuries. It's not flashy - mostly foundations and the odd bit of stonework poking through the heather - but that's precisely why it works. You're looking at genuine medieval habitation, the kind of place where families actually lived and worked, not reconstructed heritage nonsense.

The site demands patience. There's no visitor centre, no interpretive boards telling you what to think. You stand there piecing together what you're seeing: the outline of buildings, the way the settlement's positioned for shelter and water. History types will find real value here; kids might manage twenty minutes before restlessness kicks in.

Access is straightforward if you're staying at Cressfield Caravan Park just two miles away - proper walking distance - or Hoddom Castle four miles off. Both make solid bases for exploring the wider archaeological landscape of Dumfries and Galloway, which is thick with sites like this. The walk itself is the main draw: rough moorland, proper Lowlands scenery, the kind of terrain that hasn't changed much since Purdomstone was occupied.

Go in decent weather. Bring an ordnance survey map because signage is minimal. Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested in what you're seeing, half that if you're just passing through. It's free, obviously - there's nothing to charge at. Worth the detour if archaeology interests you; skip it if you need attractions with facilities.
