Pulverbatch Church

The churchyard sits quietly just outside Pulverbatch village, a handful of miles south of Shrewsbury. St Michael's is a proper country church - medieval bones with Victorian tidying up - and it's the sort of place where you half expect to find your great-grandparents' names carved into the stones.

You can wander the grounds freely, which most visitors do. The church itself opens on a call-ahead basis, so unless you're serious about peering at the interior, treat this as a graveyard stroll rather than a full visit. History types and genealogy enthusiasts will get more out of it than families with small children, though there's nothing to stop anyone from having a poke around.

The real appeal is the sense of deep rural Shropshire - this is what the county does well, not chocolate-box prettiness but genuine settlement and the weight of centuries doing their thing in a quiet corner. Come on a grey afternoon when the churchyard's empty, and you'll get the mood right.
