Pulpit Hill Fort

You won't find much left standing at Pulpit Hill Fort, but that's rather the point. This Iron Age hillfort sits just outside Aylesbury, a commanding spot where ancient Britons once dug defensive ditches and raised earthen ramparts against whatever threats the pre-Roman world threw at them. Today it's mostly grass and archaeology - the kind of place where you can actually picture the thing working, where those ditches still trace the fort's shape across the hilltop.

The views across Buckinghamshire are worth the walk up alone. On a clear day you get proper perspective on how exposed this position was, why someone chose to dig in here. It takes about twenty minutes to walk round the perimeter and poke about, less if you're just grabbing photos. History types will spend longer, trying to imagine what life looked like here two thousand years ago. Kids who like scrambling on earthworks and hunting for views will enjoy it; those expecting towers and stone walls might find it underwhelming.

Access appears to be free and open, though it's worth checking locally as these things can change. It fits nicely into a wider walk around the area - Aylesbury itself has decent pubs if you're after a proper break. Several camping sites cluster within five miles, making this an easy morning outing from Orchard View Farm or Hill Farm Camping. Go when the grass is dry and the light's decent - muddy slopes lose their appeal fast.
