Aylesbury Town Centre

The heart of Aylesbury is a fairly mixed bag, to be honest. You've got the medieval St Mary's Church dominating the skyline with its impressive spire, proper worth craning your neck for, and the Georgian architecture around the Market Square has genuine character if you can overlook the chain stores that have crept in over the decades.

What makes it work is the bones of the place. The market square itself - still a functioning market on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays - gives you a sense of what Aylesbury's been doing for centuries. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's a solid couple of hours if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots like Orchard View Farm or Hill Farm.

The real draw is walking through it en route to somewhere else, or grabbing lunch and having a mooch around the independent shops tucked away on side streets. St Mary's Church is free to visit and genuinely impressive inside. The King's Head Hotel dates back to the 16th century and you can see it from the square - that kind of thing.

Families won't find this thrilling on its own, and history buffs will want more depth than a town centre stroll provides. But if you're basing yourself at Wingbury Farm Glamping or Chiltern Yurts for a proper Buckinghamshire break, ducking into Aylesbury for an afternoon is well worth it. Just don't expect it to be a destination in itself.
