Pulford Castle

A Norman motte-and-bailey castle that's barely visible now, unless you know where to look. Pulford Castle sits just across the border in Flintshire, a short drive south of Chester, and amounts to little more than an overgrown earthwork these days - two raised lumps of ground where the keep and bailey once stood. You won't find gift shops or information boards. You get what the locals get: a quiet field, some trees, and the faint outline of 900-year-old defensive works slowly returning to grass.

It's worth the detour if you're a proper history type or a walker exploring the border country. The castle dates to around 1066 and marks the Norman advance into Wales - that matters if you care about such things. Kids will likely lose interest after ten minutes, unless they enjoy clambering on hillsides and making up stories about medieval battles. The real draw is the sense of history dissolving into landscape. It's free to visit, accessible on foot from the surrounding area, and takes about thirty minutes if you're thorough.

If you're based at any of the nearby parks - Willow Farm Glamping or Manor Wood are closest - this makes a decent morning ramble before heading into Chester proper. Don't expect ruins or stonework. Expect England's quiet side: a field, some earthworks, and the knowledge that something significant happened here, whether or not you can see it anymore.
