Priory Wood

The woodland around Priory Wood, just outside Dunmow, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - and that's precisely what makes it work. Towering oaks and birches create a proper canopy overhead, with the forest floor carpeted in bracken and leaf litter that's satisfying to walk through. A short woodland wander here takes maybe 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how many times you stop to poke about in the undergrowth.

It's ideal if you're based at Dairymeade Farm Glamping nearby and want to burn off some energy without driving anywhere. The paths are well-trodden but unremarkable - this isn't woodland with dramatic viewpoints or rare flora. What you get instead is straightforward peace and quiet, the kind of place where kids can actually run about without constantly being herded back to a visitor centre.

There's nothing flashy here: no visitor facilities that I could spot, no admission fees, just open access woodland. It's the sort of Essex forest that locals know and visitors often miss. Worth combining with a longer day exploring the Dunmow area rather than treating as a standalone destination. Go early on a weekend morning if you want to avoid the dog walkers, though honestly there's plenty of space for everyone. The woodland is genuinely restorative if you're after something low-key, but if you're expecting theatrical woodland drama, you'll be disappointed. Perfectly adequate for a couple of hours if the weather's decent.
