Priests Wood

The woodland around Armathwaite is proper dense and atmospheric - Priests Wood is the kind of place where you lose yourself for a couple of hours without trying. Ancient trees, moss-covered stones, and the sort of quiet that makes you remember why you left the car park in the first place.

It's a straightforward forest walk rather than anything dramatically scenic, but that's precisely the appeal. No viewing platforms, no cafes, no crowds. Just you, the trees, and occasionally the sound of the River Eden nearby. The ground can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter more than they might sound.

Walkers will get the most from it - this isn't a destination for standing around taking photos, it's about proper walking. Kids aged eight and up will manage it fine if they're used to muddy trails, though younger ones might find it a bit relentless. Bring a map or know the route beforehand; signage is minimal.

Allow two to three hours depending on pace and how many little detours you fancy. Free to access, which helps when you're deciding whether to bother mid-drizzle.
